Head Teachers Briefing - Understanding GLD in Early Years

Raising GLD - What works? with guest speaker Jan Dubiel, Programme Director for hey! at Coram Hempsall’s

This event is for Head Teachers and Early Years Leads within school provisions only

Jan has worked within the arena of Early Childhood Education (ECE) for over 30 years in various roles and contexts. He has a particular interest in understanding and knowledge of child development, neuroscience, and interface with theories and research to best support and educate young children.

He is a specialist in early years in nursery, reception and year in educator roles. As a Local Authority Consultant and then Senior Adviser for Early Years, he supported depth of understanding, and practice to provide effective and impactful support across the range of provision for children aged Birth to 5, within the PVI sector, childminders and schools-based provision.

As the National Lead for the EYFS Profile Jan was responsible for developing the assessment element and enabling support to provide accurate data on children’s attainment at the end of reception. He has also held roles as the National and International Director for a commercial CPD provider, responsible for developing a DfE accredited baseline assessment model and a qualification for international kindergarten educators. Both were steeped in the knowledge and understanding of how we understand and support young children’s learning and development.

What does it mean to reach a Good Level of Development?

The Best Start in Life has a national target of 75% of children achieving a good level of development by 2028. However, nationally only 51.5% of children who qualify for free school meals reach a good level of development at age five, compared to 72% of children not eligible for free school meals. And only 19.7% of children with any special educational needs (SEN) reach this benchmark, compared to 75.6% of children without SEN. Jan will share his informed perspective around placing GLDs in context and thinking through the best approaches, and some of the pitfalls to avoid.
