It is important that all children come to phonics learning with the best chance of success with a range of other skills, knowledge and experience that enables them to go on to be confident readers and writers, whom demonstrate enthusiasm and enjoyment.
This session will explore ideas for developing children’s early phonics skills through:
- Adult-led activities
- Fun, practical games
- Resources which can be differentiated depending on a child’s age and stage of development
Practitioners will:
- Gain an overview of the important aspects in teaching pre phonics
- Reflect on opportunities for children to apply their phonics learning through a literacy and language rich environment.
This is a fun and practical course that is fully engaging and includes participation. Practitioners will refine their skills to further develop the curriculum with the impact of preparing children for the phonic programme when starting school.

This course will help practitioners and teachers recognise the importance of a solid grounding in number. There will be lots of practical examples of how to use concrete materials to support an early understanding of number, as well as how we can develop children’s spatial reasoning skills, along with suggestions to support problem solving through everyday opportunities. It will include links to the EY Inspection Framework, revised EYFS Statutory Framework, Best Start in Life and non-statutory guidance.
You will learn:
- To understand the importance of a solid grounding in number and mastery of maths
- To recognise how we can support problem solving as a part of everyday practice
- To learn how to develop children’s spatial reasoning skills
